Training Tips
Probably the best tip would be Enjoy running!. Whatever distance you run and whatever level you are at just enjoy yourself. Now for the other tips:
- Running with other definitely helps with motivation so on the days you aren't with JogScotland try to find a running buddy or two.
- Warming up and stretching are essential.
- Feeling unwell? Don't run, wait until you feel better.
- Injuries happen - and if they do please don't ignore them a physio or sports massage therapist can really help.
- Drink plenty of water and after a hard or long session a sports drink can help you recover.
- Keep a record of your running, it can be a great way to see the progress you are making.
- If you do head out on your own make sure someone knows your route and rough time that you will be back.
- Carry a mobile phone if you can or change for the phone if you prefer.
Stretching
For a good stretching routine please ask your jog leaders.
Clothing
Comfort is the key for running clothing. The one essential thing for all runners is a good pair of running shoes. If you are new to the sport and are confused by array of shoes out there then go to a specialist running shop for advice, the shops listed above in the Discounts section all offer great advice and will help you work out what works best for you.
The other essential item is for the ladies. A sports bra is essential when running. There's only one excuse for not wearing a sports bra when you run, and that's being male. Otherwise, no matter what size you are, you need to arm yourself against the irreversible effects of gravity as you run. Why? Because once the ligaments around the breasts stretch, there's nothing you can do to shorten them again. Normal bras reduce breast movement by around 35 per cent, but a good sports bra achieves closer to 60 per cent. A- and B-cup sizes normally suit crop-top styles; larger sizes require moulded cups; and either way you should look for a bra which has been designed for high-impact activities. Running shops will stock sports bras but also check out Less Bounce and Booby Doo.
